Whether you are at that time in your life or not, this blog post is for you> If you are experiencing hormonal imbalance, PCOS, PMS or PMSD, then this is absolutely for you.
Have you ever wondered why some women experiencing menopause, have little to no symptoms, while others complain of hot flashes, depression, night sweats and poor sleep quality? Personally, I do not know what it feels like to break out in sweats at the most inappropriate times, but I have experienced the bloating and weight gain that often accompanies peri-menopause and menopause. I also know this isn't true for everyone. Weight gain does not have to be the ultimate end and if you are like me, it does not have to be a permanent fixture in your ageing body. Yes, you can get rid of the extra pounds, but where do we start? There is growing evidence we may need to start with our gut health. Have read and let me know what you think and even if you aren't experiencing those hormonal changes yet, tell me, what are you doing to support your gut?
Why is gut health important?
The human gut is home to trillions of microorganisms, collectively known as the gut microbiota. Recent research has shown that gut microbiota can significantly regulate various bodily functions, including the onset and severity of menopausal symptoms.
Menopause is a natural biological process that marks the end of a woman's reproductive years. It is characterized by a decline in the production of hormones, particularly estrogen, leading to a range of symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, and insomnia.
Studies have shown that gut microbiota can affect hormone levels, including estrogen. It does this by producing hormones, as well as by breaking down and eliminating excess hormones. An imbalanced gut microbiota can lead to an increase in harmful bacteria and a decrease in beneficial bacteria, leading to an estrogen deficiency and an increase in menopausal symptoms.
How to improve gut health?
To help alleviate menopausal symptoms, it is important to maintain a healthy gut microbiota. This can be achieved through various methods, including a diet rich in fibre and fermented foods, such as yoghurt and kefir, that promote the growth of beneficial bacteria. Probiotics, or beneficial bacteria supplements, can also help improve gut health and reduce symptoms. Additionally, reducing stress, avoiding processed foods, and getting regular exercise can also help improve gut health and alleviate menopausal symptoms.
In conclusion, maintaining a healthy gut microbiota is a crucial aspect of managing menopausal symptoms. Incorporating a diet rich in fibre and fermented foods, reducing stress, and getting regular exercise can help improve gut health and reduce symptoms.
