Do you know what's eating you?

Firstly, this post is not about parasites but what I am about to discuss can eat at you unawares. You may have heard me mention on several occasions, my love for what I have chosen as my profession. My training and speciality are in the area of total body detoxification and I have worked with hundreds of individuals, over the years, guiding them through their programs, and observing how they had managed to get a handle on their health issues. A detox is a wonderful tool to help the body rebalance itself but it is time to talk about how do we detox ourselves of the negative thoughts and emotions, and dare I include spiritual, that appear to fuel many of the body's imbalances.
Extensive articles written and spoken on what we should be eaten and avoided, but very little is spoken on what may be eating at us, so let me explain. When I began my journey into the field of holistic wellness and nutrition, little did I know this was deeper than just the food we ate? Over the years I learned there are several elements to disease and the individual who has them, meaning things are not always as they seem. Any disease is the body in a state of dis-ease, and we know this to be true because having a disease puts us many times in a state of discomfort, but where does the disease come from and is it true for all diseases? As a teenager and continuing into my adult years, I was plagued with allergies and chesty cases of flu. It was not until I had begun my practice I came to the realisation all of it was linked to mental and emotional stress. I internalized many of my emotions but they couldn't and wouldn't stay hidden for long.
One particular client comes to mind, who found us after her diagnosis of arthritis and had suffered several flair-ups. Even though we had taken her through detox and changed much about her diet nothing seemed to change. She would have some relief but it wouldn't be too long before she was inflamed and in pain again. It turned out there were unresolved issues between herself and her daughter and bitterness and unforgiveness was at the root of it.
Client after client exhibited similar health stories pointing to emotional issues still to be dealt with. A pattern began to emerge that clearly there seemed to be a connection between our varying illnesses and emotional wellness. For nearly a year during this pandemic, I have been working with mental health charities to support their users around nutrition and one thing stands out for me, outcomes remain the same.
How do we, as health professionals, expect to make any real difference in our clients' lives if their emotional needs remain untapped and unchanged? Will we ever help them to manage any of their diseases or nutritional issues without addressing, what is eating at them, mentally and emotionally? I believe a multi-disciplinary approach has to be taken to get people onto the road to recovery. I do not believe changing how and what we eat alone can do it. Mind you, on the flip side, what we eat and how much of it, exacerbates the effect of these negative emotions on our health. It is important to note that positive emotions such as, joy and laughter, gratitude and gratefulness, and choosing to love and forgive over hateful and angry, actually release hormones that help heal the body.
A broken soul can lead to a broken body, if nothing is done to address the pain. We bury feelings deep into our souls, hoping we either forget or it goes away, and our body responds with sickness and disease, an ever reminder of our frailty. It does not matter what you are struggling with in your life, there is hope for healing. From out of control menopause symptoms, diabetes, hormonal imbalances, to allergies and asthma, and the list goes on, I hope we look deep within ourselves and lay our finger on that hurt and start the work that leads to health and wellness. It can be done and in the mean time, treat your body with the respect it deserves.
